Shifra Hoffman, a member of the Jewish Defense League and the Executive Board of the American Friends of (Rabbi Meir) Kahane to the Knesset, charged here today that the decision by the Central Elections Committee in Tel Aviv to bar Kahane’s Kach party from participating in the July 23 elections “was prompted by Kahane’s strong showings in the polls.”
She said that supporters of Kahane will demonstrate this evening in front of the Israeli Consulate here to protest the decision against Kach.
In a statement issued here on behalf of the American Friends of Kahane, Jews and non-Jews alike were asked to protest the decision. The statement, as read to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on the phone by Hoffman, said in part:
“In a state which prizes itself on having in the Knesset Arab and Communist representatives, it is the height of hypocrisy to bar the Kach party. We feel this odious decision was prompted by Kahane’s strong showing in the polls. We therefore call upon everyone who wants to see Israel to remain as a true democracy to urge the government of Israel to rescind the decision.”
