President John F. Kennedy announced yesterday the appointment of Philip M. Klutznick, well-known Jewish leader, as a full-time member of the permanent United States delegation to the United Nations. Mr. Klutznick was given the rank of Minister. He will work with Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson, new chairman of America’s delegation to the UN, and will represent the United States in one of the UN’s major organs, the Economic and Social Council.
Mr. Klutznick, former national president of B’nai B’rith, is general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, a post to which he was elected only last month. Known in private life as one of this country’s pioneer large-scale builders, he was Federal Housing Commissioner in 1946, and is now one of the principal backers for the development of Israel’s new port of Ashdod, on the Mediterranean Sea, south of Tel Aviv. In 1957, Mr. Klutznick served as a member of the United States delegation to the UN General Assembly. He is 53.
