United States Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy embarking on the queen Mary for the U.S., said yesterday the major need in solving the refugee problem at this time was an international loan and “above all a little cooperation from Hitler.” He declared: “You can stop worrying about where to put the refugees now. That problem will be solved.”
A new proposal for solving the Jewish refugee problem has been submitted to the Government and is now under consideration, the daily telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent reported. The proposal reportedly contemplates an offer by Great Britain to create a new Jewish national home in Northeastern Rhodesia, which is declared to be most suitable for European settlement and is large enough to accommodate, in the course of time, Jewish settlers from all over the world. The Colonial Office was said to be well-disposed toward the plan, since a number of prominent politicians were prepared to support it provided other administrative details did not prove insurmountable.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain will be asked in the house of commons next week whether he will consider creation of a special government body to handle the refugee problems now shouldered by the home, foreign and labor ministries. The question will be put by laborite M.P., George Lathan.
