Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev today announced his willingness to come to the United Nations to attend a summit meeting of the Security Council, as suggested by the United States and Britain. However, he stipulated that the Security Council should place the Middle East issue in the bands of a subcommittee “including Mr. Jawarlahal Nehru and representatives of the Arab states.”
Mr. Nehru, Prime Minister of India, had already indicated his willingness to attend a Council meeting at the summit. Word was received here earlier from Cairo that United Arab Republic President Gamal Abdel Nasser was also willing and ready to come here. Gen. Charles de Gaulle announced in Paris that he would not attend such a meeting here. No one among leading diplomats or Secretariat officials has yet mentioned the possibility of including Israel’s Premier David Ben Gurion among the members of the special Council subcommittee.
