Israel Radio reported today that a kidnapped Irish soldier of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is presently in the hands of the Arab Liberation Front, an offshoot of the Palestine Liberation Organization supported by the ruling Ba’ath Party of Iraq.
Pvt. Kevin Joyce, 20, was seized six days ago in a terrorist ambush in south Lebanon during which his companion, Pvt. Hugh Doherty, 20, was fatally shot. Doherty was the 11th Irish soldier to die on duty and the 62nd fatality suffered by UNIFIL since it was established three years ago. The Israel Radio report did not say how Joyce was located. The soldier had been the object of a widespread search by UNIFIL.
