Attacked in a local hotel by two men, E.P. Adler. Davenport newspaper publisher and owner of the Lee Newspaper Syndicate, today escaped from an apparent kidnaping attempt here. One of his assailants was later arrested.
The publisher, who had come to Chicago to attend a convention of the Inland Daily Press Association, was blackjacked as he came out of his hotel room this morning. He managed to escape and summon help, although the slugging had been so vicious that it was necessary to take several stitches.
That the attack was an abortive attempt at kidnaping was proved when the hotel detectives who, together with Mr. Adler, inspected the room adjoining and discovered the apparatus used by kidnapers, a large case with air holes drilled through the sides, a revolver, and several valises containing sponges, adhesive tape and a screw driver.
During the inspection, the publisher noticed one of the attackers walking toward the group innocently. Shouting to the detectives around him, he raced after the attacker, who turned to escape. He was apprehended and taken to the police station.
