Jews in Kiev were prevented from holding memorial services this morning at Babi Yar in memory of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry today told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. After being dispersed by militiamen, the Jews were summoned by municipal authorities and told they could not assemble at Babi Yar for memorial services because “other nationalities were killed there.” (See P. 4 for earlier story.)
The Kiev Jews, who had applied to the City Council for a permit to hold the services, advised the authorities that “In view of recent experiences outside the synagogue of Kiev (a reference to arrests of congregants), we ask you to take steps to ensure that the said incidents are not repeated on this occasion and that the memorial gathering be held in peace and tranquility.”
