Formation by King Carol of a new totalitarian party along Nazi lines has been announced in Bucharest, the Associated Press reported today. The A.P. dispatch said that the announcement indicated that “a sweeping German victory” had been scored in the battle for political influence in Rumania.
The party, in which the anti-Semitic pro-Nazi Iron Guard will play an important role, will be known as the Party of the Nation and will supersede the present Party of National Rebirth, the sole Rumanian political party.
According to the dispatch, the new development, which had been presaged in previous reports, has been interpreted as meaning that Carol is “prepared to put a full Nazi program into force, even including a return to anti-Semitism in an attempt to win favor with the victorious Reich.”
Meanwhile, a United Press dispatch from Bucharest said that hundreds of Iron Guardists were scheduled to be freed under a cabinet amnesty announced last night. for all political prisoners convicted before April 26.
