Sir Herbert Samuel, former Liberal Party leader and first British High Commissioner for Palestine, is created a viscount and Julius Elias, publisher of the London Daily Herald, a baron in King George’s Coronation honors list.
Sir Herbert and Mr. Elias automatically become peers, raising to eight the number of Jews in the House of Lords. The others are Viscount Bearsted, Baron Hirst, Baron Melchett, the Marquess of Reading, Baron Rothschild and Baron Swaythling.
Sir Herbert, born in 1870 in Liverpool, served in Parliament for long years beginning in 1902 and became chairman of the Liberal Party organization in 1927. He was leader of the Liberal Party in Parliament from 1931 to 1935, when he was not returned to office. He has been Home Secretary and held other Cabinet posts.
Mr. Elias, who is managing director of the Oldham Press, directs many English publications. The Herald, Laborite daily, has a circulation of about 2,000,000, one of the largest in the world.
Sir Isaac Isaacs, former Governor-General of Australia, is made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (G.C.B.).
