Israel has “energetically queried” Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger about last week’s revelations by syndicated columnist Jack Anderson of the Secretary’s recent Mideast briefing to congressmen, well placed Israeli sources said today. Kissinger reportedly criticized Israel for its stubbornness by refusing to give up “six lousy kilometers” on the Golan Heights, and thereby thwarting any progress toward Mideast peace.
Kissinger, meanwhile, told Israeli diplomats he was quoted out of context. Furthermore, he said he never demanded from Israel officially to withdraw six kilometers on the Golan. The Israeli sources said that Kissinger understood that any further concessions in the Golan should be involved in a far-reaching agreement between Israel and Syria. He understood, they said the major differences between Syria and Egypt.
