In his letter to Mayor Kendrick, protesting against the participation of the Klan in the Sesqui-Centennial, Dr. Isaac Landman, editor of the “American Hebrew,” and for ten years associate rabbi with the late Dr. Krauskopf at Congregation Keneseth Israel in this city, declared:
“While we believe that the Klan has every right to meet under its own auspices as long as it keeps within the law, we feel strongly that any formal recognition in connection with the Sesqui-Centennial is contrary to the spirit that prompts the celebration.
“We understand that the extenuation you offer in the permission given to the Klan to parade, is that the organization is to be unmasked. Whether masked or unmasked, the principles proclaimed by the Klan are deemed un-American by a large proportion of our citizenry, and on the face of them, nullify the Declaration of Independence itself and the principles therein proclaimed upon which American democracy has been founded.”
