Klan May Be Barred from Maryland

The Ku Klux Klan is liable to prosecution in Maryland, according to State officials, because the Klan is not registered in Maryland as a foreign corporation nor chartered as a domestic corporation. The Maryland Code of 1924, Section 121, it was pointed out, says that each official of a foreign corporation not registered in Maryland and who transacts business within the State is guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to a fine of $200.

While the Ku Klux Klan, which itself is not registered with the State Tax Commission in Maryland under any name by which it can be identified readily as that organization, tax officials said they feel sure the organization is not listed with them under any other name not plainly signifying its character.

However, a woman’s auxiliary of the Klan is registered with the commission. This organization is registered as a foreign corporation under the name of the Women of the Ku Klux Klan. It is incorporated in the State of Arkansas.

The reappointment of Samuel Lasch as associate judge of the Juvenile Court of Baltimore City and Jack Lewis as a member of the State Board of Undertakers have been announced by Governor Albert C. Ritchie.

National headquarters for the campaign to raise $5,000,000 for the expansion of the National Farm School at Doylestown. Pa., have been established at 1 Park Avenue, New York. The New York Executive Committee includes Charles Hayden, Daniel L. Reardon, Vice President of the United States Trucking Corporation; Abraham Erlanger, Frank Presbrey, Robert F. Loree, Vice President of the Guaranty Trust Company, and Paul Rosenthal of Ladenburg, Thalmann & Co., Chairman.

Mr. Erlanger is also on the Business Men’s Council. Associated with him on the council are Samuel Vauclain, President of the Baldwin Locomotive Works; William Q. Wales of Boston; William A. Sproul, former Governor of Pennsylvania; Manny Strauss, business consultant, and Adam L. Gimbel, Chairman. Lewis L. Clarke. Chairman of the Executive Committee of the American Exchange Irving Trust Company, is Treasurer and Acting Chairman of the farm school Executive Committee for New York City.

Judge Max S. Levine of the Court of General Sessions was the guest of honor Tuesday night at a testimonial dinner given by the New York County Criminal Bar Association at the Hotel Astor.

Speakers were Ely Rosenberg, President of the association; Judge George L. Donnellan of General Sessions; Ferdinand Pecora, Chief Assistant District Attorney; Justice Thomas C. T. Crain of the Supreme Court. Frederick Elder, former Assistant District Attorney of Kings County, and Alexander I. Rork, former Assistant District Attorney of New York County.

A program which will attempt to “further the understanding between religious sects with discussions from representatives of all” will be a weekly feature of the new radio station opening under the direction of Charles D. Isaacson, formerly director of station WRNY.

“There is no better way of having a fair exchange of religious opinion than through the radio which reaches thousands and which is changing so rapidly in order the better to mirror every day life,” Mr. Isaacson said.
