Philip Klutznick, president of the World Jewish Congress, who has been nominated by President Carter to be Secretary of Commerce, announced here that at a meeting of the W JCongress Executive several days ago he had formally taken a leave of absence from his post as W JCongress president during his government service.
Klutznick also announced that the Executive had decided that during his absence and pending a review of the situation by the W JCongress Governing Board when it meets in April, 1980, the powers and duties of the president will be entrusted to the chairmen of the W JCongress’ four regional branches, with Edgar Bronfman, chairman of the North American branch, as convener, and in cooperation with W JCongress secretary general Gerhart Riegner.
The three other regional chairmen are Zalman Abramov, Israel branch; Gergorio Faigon, Latin American branch; and Maurice Gryntogel, European branch. Klutznick, expressing satisfaction with the Executive’s decision, said that to the extent that his new responsibilities permit, he intends to maintain his interest in the educational and cultural activities of the W JCongress.
