Jerusalem will remain united, no matter what, Mayor Teddy Kollek of Jerusalem today told newsmen at the end of his tour of “The Word From Jerusalem” exhibit at the Jewish Museum which is sponsored by Hadassah to mark its 60th anniversary. The exhibit will be on display through March 26.
Answering questions on King Hussein’s proposal to form a federated United Arab Kingdom consisting of an autonomous West Bank with East Jerusalem as its regional capital, and Jordan proper Kollek replied, “I’m just the mayor of the city of Jerusalem, not a politician for other office. This is a matter for the national government, not me.”
Noting that the Palestinians are the most important part of the problem, he stated, “We have been living peacefully with the Palestinians for many years. The others (Arab States) have nothing to do with it.”
Early in the evening, Kollek and Sargent Shriver, former American Ambassador to France and past director of the Peace Corps and the Office of Economic Opportunity, were guests of honor at a reception at the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. Shriver is the new chairman of the Israel Museum International Organization of Patrons. Mayor Kollek is in the US with his wife, Tamar, and his daughter, Osnat, for a two-week speaking tour on behalf of Israel Bonds.
