Seventy-six representatives from various sections of Greater New York, at a meeting under the a### pices of the Federation of Kosl### Shop Owners Friday night, decided to close their stores within the next week in protest against prices they are being forced to pay the “Big Four” packers for meats.
They refused to reveal the exact date on which the boycott will become effective, explaining that they do not want the slaughterers to become entirely cognizant of their plans.
Hope was still held out to the group, which met at Federation headquarters, 147 West Forty-second street, that a representative of the animal bureau of the Department of Agriculture will succeed in effecting mediation between the shop proprietors and the packers in time to avoid enforcement of the boycott.
He expects an employe of the animal bureau to call on him within the next few days, Charles Cohen, Federation president, said.
Later Friday night the Hebrew Butcher Workers Union, whose members work in the shops owned by those who belong to the Federation, met as the Rand School, 7 East Fifteenth street to decide whether to call a strike.
Indications were that there would be full cooperation between the proprietors’ and employes groups.
