The Retail Kosher Meat Trade Code Authority has suspended business and is making no attempt to collect assessments from members of the kosher meat trade, the Jewish Daily Bulletin learned yesterday.
At the same time it became known that a number of code employees who were working since January 1 on the promise that salaries would be paid when money could be collected from the kosher butchers, have filed suit in municipal courts throughout the city to recover wages.
Faced with a pile of mounting bills and an empty treasury, the Code Authority adopted a resolution suspending business indefinitely.
The action was taken after it became evident that the kosher meat trade was not cooperating with the code administration and that there was no legal method of forcing them to pay code assessments.
It was estimated that only about 300 of the 5,000 kosher butchers throughout the city are now exhibiting the blue eagle of the code.
Court suits to force members of the industry to pay assessments are forbidden under an NRA administrative order.
