Sandy Koufax, the brilliant Jewish pitcher of the Los Angeles Dodgers, won his second 1963 World Series game yesterday, defeating the New York Yankees 2 to 1 and giving the Dodgers the world championship with four straight victories over the New York club. Yesterday’s victory marked the first time in history that the powerful Yankees had ever been defeated in a world series without winning a single game.
Koufax had pitched out of rotation during the last few days of the season so that he could observe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In his first victory over the Yankees last week, he set a world series record of 15 strikeouts.
