Rabbi Nathan Krass, leader of Temple Emanu-El, will defend religion against Clarence Darrow, well-known criminal lawyer and noted agnostic, on Saturday evening, November 15, at Mecca Temple. Dr. Krass will take the affirmative of the question “Is Religion Necessary?” Rev. Dr. William Norman Guthrie, rector of St. Mark’s in-the-Bouwerie, will preside. The debate is sponsored by the Discussion Guild.
Rabbi Krass will debate Darrow in place of Abbe Ernest Dimnet, French #feric, who cancelled his engagement with Mr. Darrow upon orders from the chancery of the Catholic Archidiocese of New York. Among those who will welcome Dr. Krass and Mr. Darrow and act as honorary chairmen are Bishop Francis J. McConnell and Rabbi Louis I. Newman.
