The new season at La Scala, famous Milanese opera house, opens Sunday with a woman, who is a Jewess besides, in complete command for the first time in the 150 years of the company’s history. Signorina Anita Colombo is now the director of La Scala, having been appointed to that post following the recent death of Signor Scandiani, who directed the opera house for many years.
Miss Colombo, who was formerly assistant to Arturo Toscanini, conductor of the La Scala Orchestra, was promoted over the head of others connected with the management of the famous institution. She is described as not only a first class musician and linguist, speaking fluently four languages, but also as an intelligent, energetic business woman, fitted to cope with the serious financial problems facing La Scala
