There is no room in the United States for race hatred, Mayor LaGuardia said today as he was presented with the first “Badge of Tolerance” in New York City by a delegation headed by Charles H. Tuttle, representing the New York Round Table of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
“There are no more dangerous enemies of the Republic than those who try to set class against class, race against race and religion against religion,” said the Mayor in a statement issued through his secretary, Stanley Howe, after the City Hall ceremony.
“There is generally a selfish and sinister motive behind attempts of this sort. We should be on our guard here against subversive movements such as has caused such devastation in some other lands….We should exalt tolerance, understanding and cooperation.” He added that the badge, which is being distributed throughout the country, “typifies the spirit of brotherhood that is America.”
