While German organizations continued to condemn Mayor LaGuardia’s attack on Hitler, from many quarters messages were sent to him supporting his proposal that a figure of Hitler be placed in a World’s Fair “horror chamber.” The Artists’ Union of New York wired him offering to create the chamber. The New York Post suggested in an editorial that if Hitler were encouraged, he might “try via the State Department to curtail free speech in this country.” The editorial asked the members of the department’s Protocol Division to “stop reading their Emily Post” and Secretary Hull to do “less bowing and scraping every time Mayor LaGuardia and Hitler get into a quarrel.”
