A Las Vegas rabbi opposed to the erection of a statue of Jesus as a peace symbol in front of the local convention center reported that he has been assured by convention authorities that any statue plans they devise would be submitted for his approval. Rabbi Aaron S. Gold, of Temple Beth Shalom, said that he also accepted an invitation to become a member of the Peace Memorial Committee.
The invitation was issued after the Clark County Ministerial Association, of which Rabbi Gold is president, adopted a resolution opposing erection of religious symbols on public property. The Ministerial Association is an interfaith group. Its other officers are Rev. Glenn L. Tudor of the First Christian Church, Rev. Robert E. Bateman of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church and Rev. O.T. Phillips of the Christ Community Church. Their resolution said they opposed religious symbols on public property “in light of our national tradition of the separation of church and state and decisions which have been handed down by the Supreme Court…regarding religious practices or symbols in public programs and places.”
