Prospects of relief for victims of the scourge of Hitlerism received tremendous impetus today when Louis Lipsky, American Zionist leader, told the Jewish Daily Bulletin that Albert D. Lasker of Chicago will donate $500,000 toward a new corporation to deal with the refugee problem, now being formed by High Commissioner James G. McDonald.
The revelation came during the opening session of the twenty-fifth annual convention of the Order Sons of Zion, being held at the Lareine Hotel here today and tomorrow. There were approximately 300 delegates and visitors from six states present, most of them from Greater New York and New Jersey.
Lipsky, in a speech which was intended as an answer to the critics of Zionism, praised McDonald for the influence he has had on such men as Lasker and Felix M. Warburg. Lasker, he said, had until recently been a pronounced anti-Zionist but after hearing McDonald speak he pledged his cooperation with the Zionist cause and shortly thereafter promised the half-million-dollar donation toward McDonald’s contemplated corporation for refugee relief.
MCDONALD REBUFFED
In vindication of his claim that Palestine is the only hope of the harassed Jews of many nations, Lipsky pointed out that McDonald originally had hoped to be “another Hoover.” The High Com-
