The United Nations Security Council rejected the American resolution against Israel late this evening with Britain and France voting against the resolution. The result of the vote was 7 for the resolution 2 against and 2 abstentions. Under the Security Council regulations, two negative votes by permanent members of the Council-defeat the resolution.
Following defeat of the American resolution the Soviet Union introduced a substitute measure calling on Israel to withdraw its forces behind the armistice lines. The Security Council was to consider this measure at a late meeting tonight.
