A rally that was expected to attract some 4,000 Jews began late this afternoon to protest the oppression of Syrian Jews by authorities there. Congressman Bertram L. Podell (D.,N.Y.) was scheduled to demand that the UN Human Rights Commission investigate “the sadistic brutality of the Syrian regime in persecuting its Jewish minority.” In a message to the rally at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza opposite the UN. Mayor Lindsay declared that “the cruel and inhuman treatment accorded the Jewish community of Syria is an offense against humanity.”
