Papers Premier Yigal Allon of Israel said this afternoon that there was not likely to be a our American peace initiative in the Middle East in the near future although the U.S. would continued to offer its peace offices to the parties to resort an agreement. Allon spoke at a press conference following a two-hour luncheon meeting with Secretary of State William P. Rogers. He said that Rogers, “accepts the view that the situation (in the Middle East) is so delicate that no premature stays should be taken.”
Asked by reporters when he thought the situation would not be delicate, Allon said “When both sides ask the U.S. to militate is when the U.S. invents a new idea.” He caution that the US should consult with both parties before raising any public announcements.
Allon suggested that negotiations for us later in agreement on the Suez Canal and an overall peace settlement could take place unanimously by two separate “teams”. He added that Israel was ready to agree to proximity talks because of the internal domestic situation in the Arabs countries, but observed that unless the final talks were face-to-face, the agreement that emerged would not be trustworthy.
