A strong appeal for restoration of peace was broadcast over the Government radio station tonight by High Commissioner Sir Harold Alfred MacMichael.
Without once referring to the secret week-end visit here of Colonial Secretary Malcolm MacDonald, Sir Harold addressed himself to all persons without regard to their nationality or creed and asked them to “do all within their power to restore peace and to play an active part in quieting the passions which led to the recent ruinous campaign of murder and sabotage.”
Sir Harold warned that those practicing violence were doing the “worst possible service to the cause they have at heart.”
“They only prove to the world,” he said, “that they are not fit to govern, while making it incumbent for the Government not to give way.”
Several months must elapse, Sir Harold said, before the British Government decided on its Palestine policy. “I make an appeal for patience and appeasement,” he added, “as a step toward the peace for which you all pray.”
