A policy of selective immigration was urged upon Latin American countries by Argentine Foreign Minister Carlos Saavedra Lamas yesterday at a plenary session of the Inter-American Conference for Maintenance of Peace.
Declaring they could not support “continental isolation,” the winner of the 1936 Nobel Peace Prize said the Latin American countries are ready, and must, open their doors to foreign enterprise and immigration.
While stressing the need for increased populations, the Havas News Agency reported, he warned that this new blood must not be tainted by subversive elements and doctrines.
“We need fecund peoples,” he said, “but must not admit illiterate masses contaminated by subversive ideals; we must select immigration; we must not admit fallacious doctrines contrary to the liberal principles of democracy.”
