Latin American Jewish Communities Urged to Aid People of Honduras

The Latin American Jewish Congress issued an urgent appeal yesterday to the leaders of all Jewish representative bodies and communities in Latin America to help the people of Honduras in the wake of Hurricane Fifi which claimed the lives of some 7500 people and made 50,000 residents homeless. The LAJC urged the Jewish leaders to cooperate with local committees set up to aid Honduras. The appeal was signed by Dr. Isaac Goldenberg, chairman, and Marc Turkow. secretary, of the LAJC.

Meanwhile, the representative of the American Jewish Committee in Mexico City. Sergio Nudelstejer, confirmed that there were no Jewish casualties in the tragedy that hit Honduras, out there was considerable property damage. He said that one of the Jewish leaders in Honduras, Horst Schiftan, informed him that the local Jewish community is helping the hurricane victims. There are some 150 Jews in Honduras. Most of the approximately 70 Jews on the north coast reside in the industrial and commercial city of San Pedro Sula which was severely damaged by the hurricane.
