Fund-raising goals for Latin American Jewry for 1959 representing a 250 percent increase compared with last year’s drives were approved today at the closing session of the Latin American Conference for the United Campaign for Israel.
The delegates, representing II countries, approved a resolution declaring that the United Campaign was open to every Jew and that no Jew should abstain from contributing to it. In another resolution, the delegates called for a mobilization of Jewish institutions and leaders for a total effort to meet the fund-raising goals.
The delegates also approved a resolution urging the Zionist movement to intensify practical campaigning as the highest need of the moment, leaving debates for less critical periods. Full support was pledged to youth participation in the effort. Another resolution extended fraternal greetings to Jews coming to Israel and to those hoping to come, and to the people and leaders of Israel for their “great achievements.”
Eliahu Dobkin, president of the Keren Hayesod of Jerusalem, stressed the hope that a definite start would be made by Latin American Jewry in fulfillment of the resolutions and that they would respond fully to Israel’s needs.
