Latvian authorities yesterday released several Jews confined in isolation camps after the recent establishment of a nationalist dictatorship in the country.
Appeals to the government for the release of Jewish Socialist and Socialist Zionist leaders, arrested when the dictatorship assumed power, failed.
At the same time Latvian censors forbade the showing of the American film, “The House of Rothschild,” in any movie theatre in the country.
Widespread arrests of Jewish working class leaders of the Socialist Bund, and of the Poale Zion, Socialist Zionists, followed the dissolution of the regularly elected Latvian government and the assumption of power by a highly nationalistic regime. The new rulers also suppressed most of the Yiddish newspapers in the country and closed community centers and schools maintained by the working class organizations.
