Two high officials of the Latvian government disclaimed in public statements today any intention on the part of this country to persecute the Jews.
Vice premier Skujenek, talking over the radio, declared:
“We do not desire to persecute minorities, thus embittering their lives. Our aim is to strengthen the Latvian spirit.
“As a result of our policy we expect, in the event of danger to Latvia, to have all our citizens, regardless of religion and race, to come to the defense of the fatherland.”
General Balodis, minister of War, told the Jewish delegation from the Freiheitskamfer that the government will not permit anti-Semitism.
