Latvia’s president refused to apologize for an ad his government ran in the Israeli press that failed to address Latvian complicity in World War II crimes. The Simon Wiesenthal Center had demanded an “unequivocal apology” for the ad, which commemorated the sixth anniversary of Latvia’s independence. But Guntis Ulmanis said he had already expressed regret for the Holocaust and did not consider it necessary to revisit the issue in the ad.
