Pierre Laval, pro-Nazi premier of France, today conferred with Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, the anti-Semitic head of the Commissariate for Jewish Affairs, on the question of further anti-Jewish legislation in unoccupied France, correspondents of Swiss newspapers report from Vichy.
It is understood that Pellepoix reported to Laval on the results of the laws which have so far been introduced against the Jews in France, especially on the economic effects of these laws. A review of the functioning of the anti-Jewish laws issued by the Nazis in occupied France was also given by Pellepoix, according to the Swiss journalists.
Jewish refugees in unoccupied France are watching with anxiety the deterioration of relations between the United States and France, a report received here states. They fear that their last chance to emigrate to oversea countries will vanish should diplomatic relations between the two countries be broken off. Their position will then become even more aggravated by the fact that they will remain isolated from the rest of the free world and from their friends in the democratic countries who are trying to help them emigrate from France.
