An attempt to save the life of Dov Gruner was made here today when attorneys for Tel Aviv Mayor Israel Rokach filed a petition before the Privy Council asking permission to appeal against the death sentence imposed by a military court.
The attorneys cabled High Commissioner Sir Alan G. Cunningham and Lt. Gen. Gordon H.A. MacMillan, Palestine military commander, asking for a stay in execution pending the outcome of the plea. The Palestine Government replied that “no undertaking can be given” that the request would be granted.
Simultaneously, attempts were made to have the Colonial Office intervene to ?stpone the hanging. The Colonial Office, however asserted that the matter was in the hands of the War Office.
