Dr. A. Cohen, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, denied today that Judaism is opposed to pictorial art. Opening the Festival of Jewish Arts here, he recalled that excavations in the Holy Land had unearthed the remains of ancient synagogues decorated with beautiful mosaics.
Dr. Cohen declared that long segregation in ghettos had discouraged the development of a Jewish creative spirit, but that emancipation had produced hosts of Jews eminent in music, painting and sculpture. “With the recreation of Jewish national home,” he said, “it may be anticipated that the creative spirit of our people will receive a powerful stimulus and in time make rich contributions to the world’s artistic treasury.”
