Although there has been no kosher slaughtering in many years for the less than one hundred Jews residing in this area, a motion to prohibit shechita in the municipal slaughterhouse has been introduced in the City Council by Councilman H. Kosche, leader of the three-man delegation of the neo-Nazi “German Reich Party.”
When his oral motion was turned down after a confused debate in the City Council, he announced that he would re-submit it in written form. He then convened a public meeting attended by several hundred Bamberg citizens and, in an emotional harangue, appealed for a ban on shechita.
In a letter to the local Catholic daily “Bamberger Volksblatt,” the Christian Social Union chairman in the Council, Dr. Jonas Mehling points out that Kosche was not concerned with preventing cruelty to animals, but with “flaunting the anti-Semitic and Nazi banner,” and with demonstrating that “we Nazis are still around.” Dr. Mehling recalls that Kosche some time ago described Nazi Grand Admiral Doenitz, who is in Spandau jail serving a sentence for war crimes, as “Germany’s legitimate President.”
