Jewish leaders of ten cities met today in a national conference at the Hotel President to organize an American Association for Jewish Education which “will tie together all those who carry the responsibilities of lay leadership for Jewish schools” and seek increased support of Jewish communities for Jewish instruction.

Mark Eisner, former chairman of the New York City Board of Higher Education and chairman of the Temporary National Committee for Jewish Education, which arranged the conference, declared at the luncheon opening the meeting:

“Today the need is for a more far-reaching program of Jewish education; a program which will bring every child into the orbit of Jewish group life; a program which will provide every child with Jewish knowledge and inspiration ample to sustain him in times like these, ample to furnish him with an armory of defenses against the foul slanderings of our traducers and the demoralizing techniques which they employ.”

Others on the speakers’ list at the luncheon session were Bernard Semel, Harry H. Liebovitz, Dr. Samson Benderly and Dr. Samuel Dinin, of New York, and Judge Louis E. Levinthal, of Philadelphia. Reports were given by Ben Rosen, of Philadelphia, and Israel S. Chipkin, of New York. Prof. Horace M. Kallen of New York and Joseph Cohn of Philadelphia were to address the concluding dinner session. Other cities represented were Newark, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Pa.; Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Washington.
