Leaders of the Canadian Jewish Congress met in Ottawa several days ago with a delegation of visiting members of the Soviet Parliament to discuss the problems of Soviet Jewish emigration and Jewish political prisoners in the USSR. The meeting lasted one hour and focused on the CJC’s request that the Soviet authorities facilitate increased emigration for those Jews who wish to leave the Soviet Union. The Soviet legislators were also asked to call their government’s attention to the deep concern felt by Canadians over the harassment of Jews who apply for exit visas. The Jewish leaders appealed for the release of Jewish political prisoners or a reduction of their sentences on humanitarian grounds. The CJC members and the visiting Russians agreed that future meetings between Soviet officials and Jewish representatives on these matters would be beneficial.
