Expressing “bencern about information alleging discrimination against Iraqi nationals of the Jewish faith,” the International League for the Rights of Man today asked the Iraqi Government for “clarification of these reports regarding the violation of basic human rights.”
In the memorandum, the League urged that “the discriminatory legislation be repealed, that Iraqi Jews receive the same treatment as other nationals” and that those Jews who have resigned themselves to the loss of their nationality should be helped to obtain alternative documents and should be compensated for their assets.” It is estimated that there are 3,000 Iraqi Jews residing in Iraq and 1,000 living in other countries.
