A novel suggestion that members of the Mandates Commission of the League of Nations be given the opportunity by the League for a personal visit to Palestine in order to study on the spot the different problems connected with the Palestine mandate was made here today at the session of the Council of the League by the Spanish representative.
Today’s session of the Council listened to a report submitted by Dr. Benes, Foreign Minister of Czechoslovakia, on behalf of the Mandates Commission. Dr. Benes reported the conclusions of the commission’s last session on Palestine. The Council took cognizance of Dr. Benes’s report, but withheld approval of the various recommendations pending the next session in April.
In his report, Dr. Benes mentioned inception of the various organs of autonomy in Palestine and measures taken to develop colonization in the country. He also drew attention of the Council to the fact that petitions demanding equality with Moslems in religious courts had been settled, and also one demanding inclusion of the Ashkenazi Council in the Knesseth Israel.
The Jewish angle of the report was adopted by the Council without debate. No mention was made of the petitions referring to Palestine which had been presented at the November session of the League Council, and no remarks were offered by the British mandatory representative.
