The Council of the League of Nations today rejected the French proposal that the League assign funds to assist refugees from the Saar region.
It was argued that the League has no budget for providing relief for refugees. M. Joseph Avenol, the League’s general secretary, declared that the funds which the League possesses are insufficient to include an extra assignment for refugee work. The budget of the League has been balanced till January 1, 1936, and no further credits are available, M. Avenol stated.
James G. McDonald, the League’s High Commissioner for Refugees, in a statement today took the attitude that the League is obligated to cooperate financially with his commissariat and with the French government.
“It must be remembered,” Mr. McDonald stated, “that tens of thousands of refugees from Germany are still helpless, and have no assistance whatsoever. The League must aid the Saar refugees that they should not be placed under the care of private charities.”
