An attack on Israel was made by Lebanon at the 42nd conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union now taking place here.
Previously the Israel delegation had spoken out for Near Eastern peace. Zeev Stepher, chairman of Israel’s delegation, told the conference that “Israel has repeatedly stated Its readiness for direct talks with the Arab states as a means of solving the outstanding problems and differences, but unfortunately the intransigeance of these nations is a primary factor in the continuation of the present situation.”
“Notwithstanding these difficulties.” Mr. Shepher stated, “we in Israel are continuing our work with ever growing energy” toward peace. He told of opportunities for Near Eastern development and the raising of living standards and how international cooperation could make this possible.
Mr. Shepher expressed his regret that the report submitted by the secretary general of the Parliamentary Union did not sufficiently clarify the true nature of the present political deadlock in the Near East.
