Brazil’s efforts to mediate the dispute between Israel and the Arab states would be welcome, Lebanese President Camille Chamoun told a Brazilian newspaperman, the newspaper Tribuna da Imprensa reported here.
In an interview, obtained by Hermann Nobre Alves, Tribuna correspondent in Beirut, the Lebanese President said that “any mediation would be welcome, but especially that of Brazil because Brazil has no interests of its own in the Near East’ and because there are in Brazil great communities of Syrians, Lebanese and Jews. “
The newspaper quotes M. Chamoun as saying that the main problem to be solved in the situation is the fate of the Arab refugees. He is also reported as saying that while he foresees further border clashes between Israel and the Arab states, he does not believe that they will lead to war.
