Both the Government and the Chamber of Deputies are investigating the conduct of Dr. Charles Malik, former Lebanese Foreign Minister, who made a friendly visit last week to the Israel pavilion at the United States World Trade Fair in New York City, it was reported here today.
Dr. Malik, who visited the pavilion in his capacity as president of the United Nations General Assembly, will be recalled to defend himself, if necessary, it was learned. Hussein Oueini, the present Foreign Minister, said that, even if Dr. Malik was deceived into entering the pavilion, as had been stated in his defense, it was “shameful that he then drank a toast to Israel.”
Rashid Karami, the Lebanese Foreign Minister, said that Lebanese representatives at the United Nations had been instructed to “make it clear” that Dr. Malik’s conduct could not affect Lebanon’s Palestine policy.
