The displaced and refugee Jews of Europe “can be transformed from helpless wanderers to self-reliant citizens,” former Governor Herbert H. Lehman said yesterday in a message urging support of the ORT 1946 fund drive for $4,000,000. The message was read to the annual meeting of the ORT Council of Organizations.
Mr. Lehman’s message to 1,000 delegates from fraternal societies and synagogues of New York City praised the ORT’s establishment of training courses in DP centers in Germany, while he was director general of UNRRA, and cited the recent expansion of these activities under a new agreement with UNRRA officials.
Professor William Rappard, member of the Swiss Assets Commission in Washington, reported to the meeting on his observations of the ORT’s organization and activity in Switzerland. Dr. Mordecai Nurock, former Chief Rabbi of Latvia, who recently returned from a tour of Europe said that government officials throughout that continent are eager to cooperate with the ORT rehabilitation programs.
A report on the ORT program – which operates in Europe, South America, North and South Africa and Shanghai – was delivered by Dr. David Lvovitch, vice-president of the World ORT Union, who has just returned from a tour of Europe.
