Governor Herbert H. Lehman declared today that he was disappointed that the Federal Government had not supplemented State action in attempts to control interstate shipments of milk. Dairymen who attended the Dairy Day gathering at the New York State Agricultural Experimental Station here heard the Governor say that “the State cannot effectively control interstate shipments of milk, and our milk problem has important interstate aspects.”
Mr. Lehman said that on the whole “milk control efforts to date have brought material results to the milk producer, although a few dishonest elements have made trouble for the group through threats to close milk plants and purchase milk elsewhere.”
The Governor opposed the suggestion that a State authority take over the dairy industry, saying he hoped “that a permanent plan could be worked out between dealers and producers which would be satisfactory to all concerned.
