A letter bomb addressed to Greville Janner, a Labor MP and president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, was intercepted by the postal authorities yesterday. The explosives contained in a hand-addressed brown envelope were sufficient to maim the recipient but not to kill him, police said after the device was detected at a post office in Worthing, Sussex.

Janner has been a prominent campaigner against neo-Nazi and racist organizations and an outspoken defender of Israel. Other letter bombs

have been sent recently to five MPs, including Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The Provisional Irish Republican Army has claimed responsibility for them. But the police do not believe the device sent to Janner was the work of Irish terrorists.
