Acting upon direct instructions from Hitler, and on orders signed by General Goering, Admiral von Levetzow, Police President of Berlin, today conferred the Life Saving Medal upon two Berlin Jews.

It is understood that they saved the life of a high-ranking official of the Nazi party.

The recipients of the Nazi medal are Jewish war veterans. The details as to the rescue act for which they were honored by the highest officials of the Nazi government, are not disclosed. Admiral von Levetzow, however, in bestowing the medals upon the two Jews, read an official document saying that their act was appreciated by Hitler himself.

Walter Callman, a manufacturer, one of the recipients of the medal, is the chairman of the Berlin branch of the League of Jewish Front Soldiers in Germany. The other recipient, Leo Bernhardt, is a member of the same branch. He is a merchant.

The order awarding the medals to the two Jews was signed by Goering on May 7, 1935. It reads as follows:

“The Leader and Reich Chancellor has under the provisions of the decree of April 30, 1935, conferred upon the factory-owner Walter Callman and the merchant Leo Bernhardt the Commemoration Medal for Saving Life in recognition of their rescue act on September 15, 1934.”
