Likud MK Shmuel Rechtman said that he would resign from the Knesset if the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against his conviction last week for accepting a bribe from a building contractor while serving as Mayor of Rehovath eight years ago. He was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. His announcement that he would leave voluntarily reduced the possibility of an embarrassing legal and political scandal for Likud.
